Guidelines for Getting Traffic from Digg
I have talked before about social media sites not delivering enough traffic. Traffic from social media sites is very little compared with search engines. I do not recommend you using too much of your efforts on them. You can still get some traffic, if you use the following guidelines. Remember still, that your time maybe alot better spent on coming up with new ideas for blog posts, than with being active in social media.
Guidelines
Get a lot of friends with similar interests
If you just add bookmarks to social media sites, you probably will not get that many readers. Many people spam these sites with links, and they are filled with not so good posts. The only way to get readers is to generate a big group of friends, and have them read your postings. Your friends can digg your posts and make them even more popular. If you have really good friends, you can even ask them to digg your posts to get them on the main page.
Getting friends in digg is easy. Just find people that have made similar posts as you. Then you comment and digg their posts and ask them to be your friend. Not all will accept, but some will. I believe that you should have around 100 friends, before you will get notable traffic from digg.
Think long and hard about the title
When you are digging your posts, focus on the title. Make it alluring, and use all your efforts coming up with it. There are basically two ways of doing this, optimize for searches, or optimize for instant readers. I recommend that you optimize your titles for searches, because in the long run it will provide you with more visitors.
Optimizing for searches means, you think of words that people might use to search for your content. If you can think of popular search keywords, then use them in the title. This will make it so, that when people search digg for content, they will probably find your posts.
For instant reader optimization you must provide a smashing title. The title must be so good, it jumps right out of the page, grabs the reader by the head, and keeps the reader staring at it. This will get you instantly many readers, but in the long run, posts of this type do not popup in that many searches.
Make it easy for your readers to share your content
Add buttons to your blogs to help your readers digg your posts. Put a digg-this button on all your posts, or use a tool that provides many different social media bookmark links at once. I for one, use sharethis on my site. It allows readers to bookmark pages on many different social media sites.
Conclusion
To survive and get traffic from digg, remember these points:
- To get readers on digg you must have a lot friends
- Think long and hard about the title
- Make it easy for your readers to digg your posts
- Unique Post
