I am starting a case study of the effectiveness of social bookmarking sites. Until now I have not been active in that area. I have only added some of my posts to Digg and StumbleUpon, because they have not delivered. Maybe I have used them in the wrong?
Anyway, now is the time to really put these sites into the test.
My efforts
I am going to add all the posts here to the following social bookmarking sites:
I have around 40 posts so submitting to all these sites will take some time. Probably at least a few days.
Do you know of other great social bookmarking sites that I should use? If you do, please tell me
How I Evaluate the Results
I will evaluate the results based on the traffic I get from these sites. The traffic will be counted by google analytics. I am going to report all my findings here for your enjoyment.
I Need Help from You
Have you used these sites before and how successful have you been? What type of results can I expect? Is there something else that I should do besides just posting the links there?

Registering for an account and just posting everything from your blog has proven to have little result for me. So I think you need to link up with some friends on each network just like on Twitter for it to be successful. I’m currently on reddit.com as McKnight and also on SU under the same nick so look me up and we can be friends. Good luck with the experiment, looking forward to seeing the results.

Hi Gordon,
Just what I expected. My experiences until now has been next to nothing. Maybe networking and linking up with people is the only way… but we will see.
I’m gonna look you up, maybe we should join forces
Hi, I tried some of these in the past, but I gave up in terms of getting traffic from my own submissions. Be especially careful with StumbleUpon – it’s pretty tricky and I’ve heard that some bloggers were banned for adding too many of their own posts. I think the point is that someone “random” should StumbleUpon your post and that makes it more exciting when it happens that way.
Delicious might be the best one from your list in terms of getting traffic. So I say go for it (just be careful with SU).
One more thing, for your own personal use Diigo is the best bookmarking site out there. I use it for research and background material when I’m working on a post. It’s the only service that lets you highlight the important parts of the post so you don’t have to read the whole thing again to find the part you like.

Great ideas Ileane, thanks! I have never even tried Diigo. I’ll try to be carefull with SU, hopefully I won’t get a ban.
I have now submitted all my posts to delicious, and I was delighted to find out that someone had already bookmarked some of my posts. Too bad, I have not yet received a single hit from delicious…
I use Stumble Upon a little, but Ileane said, never post your own articles, same in Digg. Not only does the site frown on that but most heavy users of those sites don’t like that either.
Also, certain topics do better on those like tech and news, so it becomes hard to get a front page on digg writing about blogging. Same with Stumble….. I am @keithbloemendaal on Stumble, don’t use any of the others anymore…..
